City reports two COVID deaths; 36 new cases

Two more Hamiltonians over the age of 80 have died of COVID-19, according to public health

Hamilton public health reported 36 new COVID-19 cases and two new deaths over the weekend.

Both of the new deaths appear to be residents over the age of 80, according to The Spectator’s records.

One death was recorded on Saturday, while the other was reported on Sunday.

A total of 398 residents have died with the virus since the pandemic was declared last

March. One death was reported in the outbreak at Dundas Retirement Place.

Four residents and two staff members have been infected since the outbreak was declared on June 10.

There are a total of six active outbreaks in the city — two are in workplaces, one is in a senior’s home, one is in a supportive housing facility, another is in a hospital and one is in a shelter. No new outbreaks were declared over the weekend.

The largest ongoing outbreak

is at Denholme Manor, a supportive housing facility in the city’s Durand neighbourhood. Nine residents and three staff members have tested positive since the outbreak was declared on May 23.

The outbreak at Cancord Inc. on Elgin Street in the city’s north end was declared over. Three staff members were infected with the virus.

There was one new hospitalization over the weekend, according to Spectator data.

Two hospitalizations had been recorded on Saturday but one was removed from the city’s count on Sunday.

A total of 1,453 residents have been hospitalized with COVID-19.

Hamilton has recorded a total of 21,143 cases of the virus since the pandemic began, with 154 cases still considered active. Seventeen new cases were reported Saturday, while 19 new cases were recorded on Sunday.

More than 95 per cent of those infected have recovered, according to public health. The city’s seven-day average for new cases was 17 as of Friday.

Vaccines in Hamilton

A new batch of Hamiltonians will have their shot at their second dose of their COVID-19 vaccine this week after the city was declared a Delta hot spot. As of Wednesday, Hamilton residents who got Pfizer or Moderna on or before May 30, can book their second shot.
