A tractor-trailer full of baby pigs skidded into a Haldimand County ditch Monday morning, trapping the piglets inside.

According to Haldimand OPP, the driver lost control of the rig just before 9 a.m.

The truck ended up on its side along Concession 4 Walpole east of Haldimand Road 55, roughly halfway between Jarvis and Nanticoke.

“Firefighters worked hard to keep the piglets cool,” tweeted Const. Mary Gagliardi.

An OPP video posted to social media showed firefighters spraying the side of the transport truck with water in order to hydrate and cool the piglets on a scorching afternoon that saw the outdoor temperature top 30 C.

Police say “several” piglets died “as a result of the collision.”

The driver, a 54-year-old man from Port Colborne, escaped injury and was charged with careless driving.
