Extend the life of fresh foods while replacing single use plastics

Hamilton Cotton Factory

Over the past few years, Mind Your Bees Wrap has grown exponentially from where they began, with $50 and an idea. It all started in 2017, when co owner Ashley’s maternity leave was up and she needed to embrace change from balancing life as an events coordinator with her busy new job as mom to a one year old. The gift of a lovingly made beeswax food wrap from a friend made out of an old sheet changed her life. Cutting up and preparing food for a one year old made the wrap an essential component of her kitchen. With the wrap, uneaten apple slices and snacks lasted longer which saved time and patience, both essential as a working parent. Desperate for more wraps, she drew on her background in sustainable agriculture and food security to create wrap prototypes with a yard of fabric, some jojoba oil, and a pound of beeswax. Once she had more, she began to share them amongst friends as well as anyone who ordered batch meals from her working chef ’s kitchen. In September, 2017, with $50 and a bedsheet, she and her partner Daniel, began selling Mind Your Bees wraps via Facebook. They pitched the product to stores and wholesalers in the Hamilton and Toronto area, grassroots style. By the holiday season, they and two other hires were busy bees working on Mind Your Bees Wrap full-time! As the business grew, they moved production facilities several times; from a tiny apartment, to a basement, a Vine street studio, and now at the historic Hamilton Cotton Factory. Mind Your Bees Wrap has grown but their values have stayed the same. They’re dedicated to reducing food waste and single use plastics, one wrap at a time, and supporting sustainable, small, local businesses. Mind Your Bees pioneered beeswax food wraps offer fun, seasonal, organic prints for every occasion which echo the message that ‘green’ doesn’t have to mean ‘boring’.
