Fire at marine business probed

The Office of the Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate a blaze at a business in Hamilton’s North End. In a media release, Hamilton Fire Department deputy fire chief Dan Milovanovic said emergency services received a call for an alarm system activation at 65 Guise St. E. — between John Street North and Discovery Drive — at 11:48 a.m. on Jan. 17. Milovanovic said that responding crews reported heavy smoke coming from Brewers’ Marine Supplies warehouse and the blaze was quickly upgraded to a structure fire. The marine supply store contained large quantities of marine grade nylon rope, general marine supplies and paint, according to Milovanovic. Once on scene, Milovanovic said crews reported heavy smoke and visible flames coming from the roof of the building. At that time, the fire was also upgraded to a multiple-alarm call and additional trucks and crews were dispatched to the scene. Milovanovic said firefighters then entered the warehouse, where they found a “deep-seated, well-involved fire” that took more than an hour to bring under control. There were no injuries were reported in the blaze.
