We need big picture thinking

This letter is directed to city council candidates saying they don’t want their future constituents paying for services they don’t receive (such as transit) and that area rating should be maintained.

I don’t have kids, but my taxes pay for schools. I don’t own a car, but my taxes pay for roads. I don’t have an alcohol or drug problem, but my taxes pay for public health programs addressing these issues. The point of the taxes I pay isn’t to cover specific services I use, but to pay for services that benefit our society as a whole.

At the end of the day, it’s in our collective best interests for everyone to support these services whether or not people use them.

In this election, I’ll be looking to vote for those that will bring forward and advocate for the interests and concerns of their constituents; but I’ll also be looking to vote for those who can look at the bigger picture. Maintaining area rating is not in the best interests of our community as a whole. Matthew Freeland, Hamilton
