More doctors yes, but …

It’s a good thing that Ontario is investing in more medical school spaces to address the physician shortage, as announced by the premier and health minister in Hamilton this week. But that alone does not adequately address the shortage of family doctors. More than 53,000 people in Hamilton don’t have one, and the trend is worsening. As well as new training spaces, we need revitalization of the primary care system so more young doctors will go into family medicine as opposed to other specialties. That’s a cornerstone of the health crisis, and the government needs to address it.
