Pay attention to AI

I was happy to read the editorial May 24 regarding AI. This issue should be taken seriously by everyone. Even though global warming is now an emergency, AI is an issue that could be beneficial, or it could destroy humanity.

In January 2015, hundred of scientists and AI researchers gathered in Puerto Rico to discuss how AI could be beneficial. They realized the new technology was capable of ending poverty, disease and war. But if the technology led to superintelligence where humans lost control, humans would become redundant.

The purpose of the conference was to create a committee of people from science and industry to create “beneficial AI.” This group wrote an open letter to the world on AI which was signed by more than 8,000 leaders who had worked on AI.

Scientists have called upon world leaders to regulate AI systems and put in safeguards against those who want to ignore the regulations.

In June of 2022, our government tabled Bill 27 regarding AI, but it has not been enacted.

If global action is not taken soon the rich and powerful could cause massive problems. People in Canada need to understand the ramifications of this technology on every person.

Max Tegmark wrote a book entitled “Life 3.0 Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.” It’s worth a read. Roman Caruk, Hamilton
